What to look for before buying

Accelerator performance (TOPS)

TOPS (trillions of operations per second) is the headline spec. As a rough guide: the AI Camera's IMX500 handles single-model vision tasks at camera frame rates; the Hailo-8L (13 TOPS) runs one demanding vision model comfortably; the Hailo-8 (26 TOPS) handles heavier models or several in parallel; and the Hailo-10H in the AI HAT+ 2 reaches around 40 TOPS (INT4) with 8 GB of its own LPDDR4X memory, which is what makes on-device LLMs and vision-language models possible. Don't overbuy: for a smart camera project, 13 TOPS is genuinely enough.

Compatibility: Pi 5 vs Pi 4 and older

This is the spec that trips up most buyers. The AI HAT+ boards require a Raspberry Pi 5, because they use the Pi 5's PCIe interface — they will not work on a Pi 4. The AI Camera, by contrast, works with any Raspberry Pi that has a CSI camera connector, including the Pi 4 and Pi Zero 2 W. System RAM

The accelerator does the inference, but the Pi still runs your code, the camera pipeline and the OS.
